Lucille Handon, internationally recognized as the world's oldest living person, has died. He died on Tuesday at the age of 118 in a nursing home in the south of France. Al-Jazeera news.
Lucille Handon was born on February 11, 1904 in the south of France. She was known as Sister Andre. The year Handon was born, New York had just opened its first subway. World War I broke out a decade later.
Lucille Handon died in her sleep at her nursing home in Toulon yesterday. Nursing home spokesman David Tavella confirmed the news.
David Tavella told the French news agency AFP, "It's a very sad event... but he wanted very much to go back to his late brother." He thought it would be liberating.'
Raised in a Protestant family, Lucille Handon was the only sister of three brothers. They lived in Alsace, a city in the south of France.
In an interview with AFP on her 116th birthday, Lucille Handon said her fondest memory of her life was the return of the two brothers after the end of World War I in 1918.
Handon said, 'This is a rare occurrence for any family. Usually seen in these cases, both died. But instead they both survived. Both are back.'
Handon was initiated as a Catholic Christian at the age of 26. At the age of 41, she joined the Daughters of Charity as a nun. From then on she became known as Sister Andre. He served 31 years in a hospital in France.
Lucille Handon later moved to the Toulon area on the Mediterranean coast. He spent the last days of his life at St. Catherine Labor Nursing Home there.
