Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi's adviser Oleksiy Arestovich has offered to resign amid criticism over a controversial speech he made. He apologized to the people of Ukraine for that comment, calling it a 'fundamental mistake'. BBC news.
Last Saturday, a Russian missile attacked an apartment building in the Dnipro area of Ukraine. A few hours later, Arestovich said the missile appeared to have hit the building after the Ukrainian air force shot it down. Ukrainian authorities later said the building was targeted with a Russian-made KH-22 missile. They do not have the ability to shoot down such missiles.
Arestovich has been the subject of angry Ukrainian backlash after saying the missile was downed by Ukrainian forces. Some say the official bolstered the position of Russian propagandists. Again some members of parliament of Ukraine signed a petition. The petition demanded the dismissal of Arestovich as a public official.
Arestovich apologized for this. In a Telegram post, he wrote, "I sincerely apologize to the relatives of the victims, residents of Dnipro, and all those who were offended by my wrong comments about the Russian missile attack on residential buildings. Arestovich later posted a letter announcing his intention to resign. He referred to his statement as a 'fundamental mistake'.
Volodymyr Zelensky has yet to comment on Arestovich's decision to resign.
Arestovich is quite a familiar face on social media. He provides daily updates and discussions on various issues related to the Russia-Ukraine war on his YouTube channel. The channel has more than 16 lakh subscribers. His videos have more than two lakh views. He spoke in Russian on these occasions.
Russian officials also blamed Kiev for the attack, using Arestovich's statement.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia does not attack residential buildings. This happened because of the Air Force of Ukraine.
Ukrainian officials say Saturday's attack has killed 44 people so far. Several are missing. However, there is no possibility to rescue them alive.
