Cause of murder
Three-quarters of journalists are killed in non-conflict areas. More than half of the 86 journalists are from the Latin American region.
Journalists have been killed for covering organized crime, armed conflict and the rise of militancy. Journalists have also lost their lives reporting on corruption, environmental crimes, abuse of power and protests.

Impunity has increased
Unesco says the impunity rate for killing journalists is about 86 percent, which is "shockingly high." This rate is the highest in the last five years, the United Nations said.
Apart from the murders, journalists have been subjected to other forms of persecution in the past year. These include disappearances, abductions, forcible detention, harassment with lawsuits and online violence, particularly against women journalists.
