ExxonMobil is one of the world's largest multinational oil and gas companies. Scientists of the US company had correctly predicted the increase in global temperature due to climate change in the 1970s.
ExxonMobil's own researchers predicted how burning fossil fuels would increase global temperatures. But the company publicly denied the link the researchers found.
The academics made the allegations after analyzing data from the company's internal documents. However, ExxonMobil has denied this allegation.
The company told the BBC: 'The issue has come up several times in recent years. Each time our response was the same—those who say “Exxon knew” are wrong.'
Companies like ExxonMobil have made hundreds of billions of dollars selling fossil fuels. Scientists, governments and the United Nations say emissions from fossil fuels are increasing global temperatures.
According to the study, ExxonMobil's predictions were much more accurate than those of the world's leading NASA scientists.
Naomi Oreskes, a professor of the history of science at Harvard University, told the BBC that it really exposed the extreme hypocrisy of ExxonMobil's leadership. They knew their own scientists were doing this very high standard research. The company's leadership had the privileged access to this data, while they told the rest of us that climate research was nonsense.
Co-author Jeffrey Superen called the study's findings "definitive evidence." He is an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy at the University of Miami. "Our analysis basically allowed us to cite for the first time a number that ExxonMobil knew," he said. And that is, as a result of burning their fossil fuel products, the temperature of this planet is going to increase by 0.2 degrees Celsius every decade.'
Jeffrey Superen said the researchers had never before published quantitative scientific evidence in ExxonMobil's documents.
