Brazilian President Lula da Silva has vowed to defeat the 'new monster'. News from AFP.

Lula made this promise in a speech addressed to university rectors at the presidential palace in the capital Brasilia on Thursday.

Lula said, 'We have to challenge. New monsters to defeat. This monster is the rise of an ultra-orthodox, far-right movement. They hate everyone who doesn't agree with their way of thinking.'

Lula, a left-wing former trade union leader, defeated far-right then-president Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil's election in October last year. Lula took over as president earlier this month.

Lula, 77, is serving as Brazil's president for the third time. He previously led the largest economy in Latin America in two terms from 2003 to 2010.

A week after Lula took office, riots broke out in the Brazilian capital. On January 8, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters occupied the country's Congress building, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court building. They attacked and ransacked. Thousands of people were arrested in connection with the riots.

Lula commented that the rise of the radical right is not only a problem in Brazil. According to him, the rise of far-right is seen all over the world.

While mentioning Bolsonaro's influence in his country Brazil, Lula mentioned former US President Donald Trump. Bolsonaro is often called 'Tropical Trump'.

Lula said he had never seen Brazil so gripped by hatred.

"Although we have defeated Bolsonaro, we must defeat hatred, lies, confusion, extremism," the Brazilian president said. Because, this society must return to civilization.'
