Technology company Microsoft is going to lay off workers again in the new year. According to various media reports, the company will lay off about 11,000 employees from various departments.
Thousands of workers were laid off last October at the company of Bill Gates, one of the world's richest men. Now that number is increasing almost 10 times. The employees of the company's human resources and engineering departments are in the list of layoffs this year.
Lately, there has been a trend of layoffs in the US technology sector. Facebook's parent companies Meta and Amazon have recently cut staff. The companies claim that this step has been taken due to reduced demand in the wake of the global recession.
UK-based television Sky News reports that Microsoft is planning to cut 5 percent of its workforce. This number is about 11 thousand.
According to several US-based media reports, a significant number of employees in the engineering department will be laid off. As a result, one-third of Microsoft's workforce could be lost. However, Microsoft authorities refused to comment on this matter.
As of June 30 last year, a list showed that Microsoft had 221,000 employees. Among them, 1 lakh 22 thousand workers worked in the United States and 99 thousand workers in the rest of the countries.
In October last year, Microsoft laid off about 1,000 employees from various departments. Earlier last July, Microsoft laid off 1 percent of its 180,000 employees as part of a restructuring. At that time, 1 thousand 800 employees of the company were fired. After the first round of layoffs last July, Microsoft cut another 200 jobs from its customer-focused research and development projects in August.
