A heated debate has begun over the use of gas in cooking in the United States. On Jan. 9, state Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Commissioner Richard Trumka said the agency is considering a ban on gas stoves. The CPSC has identified gas stoves as a 'hidden hazard'.

According to The Economist report, many in the Conservative Party are angry at the debate over the use of gas in cooking. Many blame US President Joe Biden for this. Ronnie Jackson, a Republican congressman from Texas, tweeted, 'If the freaks in the White House come to take my stove, my frosty hands can be taken away. Come and take it!!'

Television chef Andrew Gruel protested by tying himself to a gas stove with blue tape. Some Democrats also protested. Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia called the ban a 'recipe for disaster'. Why is there so much debate about gas stoves in the United States and whether or not they can be banned?

38 percent of US homes use gas stoves for cooking. However, this rate varies from state to state. Those who favor the use of gas stoves say that using this stove is a relatively cheap and effective alternative to electric stoves. The food cooked in this oven also tastes better.

The trade organization The American Gas Association publishes cooking recipes on gas stoves at cookingwithgas.org. In sponsored posts on social media, many have expressed excitement about their company's gas stove. However, nitrogen dioxide and other harmful gases can be released from these household appliances. It causes health hazards. Pollution can be reduced by improving ventilation. But indoor pollution cannot be controlled much. Greenhouse gases including carbon dioxide, methane are released from burning gas stoves.

The Inflation Reduction Act is working to encourage consumers to switch to electric stoves instead of gas stoves. Stoves are discounted up to $840. However, 60 percent of electricity in the United States is produced by burning gas and coal. Because of this, gas alternatives are not always environmentally friendly. Some Democratic city councils have passed laws to limit gas use to reduce fossil fuel use.

In 2019, the city of Berkeley, California banned the use of fossil fuels for heating and cooking in new buildings. The California Restaurant Association tried to sue. But the judge dismissed it. Gas will be banned from some new buildings in New York City this year. A similar proposed plan in New York state failed to pass the state legislature last year. But New York's Democratic governor, Cathy Hochul, may try again. Since 2021, more than 20 states, most of which are governed by Republicans and which provide gas, have introduced legislation to suspend these restrictions.

On January 11, White House spokesperson Trumka said in a tweet that the Biden administration has no plans to ban the use of gas for cooking. CPSC will not take away anyone's gas stove. But if there is a ban, it will apply to new stoves. Those who have stoves in their kitchens will not be covered by the ban. CPSC is now focusing on improving the quality of new products. Proponents of using gas stoves should be given time to cool down, he said.
